Assistive Technology Discussion
While
student teaching and in my own classroom, we used technology mostly during
small groups. Roblyer and Hughes (2019) talk about using blended learning in
the classroom, and one way to incorporate blended learning is to use a rotation
model. The authors discuss that a rotation model allows students to go from
learning from teacher-led instruction to online learning, and that is what I
have observed in most classrooms. This allows teachers to meet the needs of all
students because they will receive individualized instruction on computers,
while also getting instruction from the teacher in a smaller group size.
Blended learning allows for teachers to personalize the technology used in
classrooms to meet the needs of students as well. One technology that I have observed
being used in the classroom to meet the needs of all students is iReady, which
is a personalized learning and assessment program. Students would work on this
during small group time.
Roblyer
and Hughes (2019) also discuss using multiple means of representation and
multiple means of expression to meet the needs of all students. Technology
allows us to do this even more for students now. I could have students express
themselves in multiple ways using technology by giving them choices. They can
use Canvas, Google slides, Prezi, and several other sources to show what they
have learned.
Some
technology that I could use in the classroom to meet the needs of all students,
according to Roblyer and Hughes (2019), are text-to-speech products, voice
recognition software, calculators, and alternative keyboards. According to Maza
(2021), using technology like the previous examples allows for all students to
get hands-on learning, regardless of a disability they may have.
